Following the end of World War I, a combination of economic hardship, crop failures, and simmering resentment against Dutch taxation and forced labor erupted across West Java. In Garut, this frustration coalesced into a spiritual and political movement. Inspired by local kyai (Islamic scholars) and charismatic leaders like Haji Hasan, thousands of peasants and students, including Siswi, began a long march to the kabupaten (regency capital).
