He was deeply influenced by the Advaita philosophy of Adi Shankaracharya and the Bhakti movement, synthesizing these into a universalist approach. His spiritual practice was characterized by intense Tapas (austerities) in the caves of the Krishna River basin and the forests of the Western Ghats.
