The 24 Nights tour featured guest appearances by several musicians. For "Rock 1," you might hear performances with guests like B.B. King, who was a significant influence on Clapton.
The original release was a "best of" compilation that mixed rock, blues, and orchestra on the same disc. It was jarring to go from the orchestra swell of "Layla" (coda) to the barroom grind of "Before You Accuse Me."
๐ฌ Both. The 4K-restored concert film is stunning โ watch Clapton trade licks with a young Robert Cray or feel the roar of a sold-out Albert Hall. The audio mix (available on 2CD/3LP) puts you on stage, amp-side.
The modern Eric Clapton is a gentleman of the blues. He plays small, intimate theaters. He sits down. He plays acoustic ballads.
Between 1990 and 1991, Eric Clapton undertook one of the most ambitious projects of his career. Over two years, he performed 42 concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, a venue he holds dear, having first played there as a member of The Yardbirds in 1964. The first year, 1990, saw an 18-night run. Unsatisfied with those initial recordings, Clapton returned the following year to break his own record with a staggering 24 concerts between February 5 and March 9, 1991.
๐ For me, itโs "Wonderful Tonight" โ not a ballad here, but a slow-burning rock arrangement that builds into a solo dripping with melodic fire. Goosebumps.
