Hubay's professional career took off in 1844 when he became the lead violinist (Primgeiger) of the orchestra at the National Theatre in Pest. This was the beginning of a long and distinguished association with the theatre, where he served as first concertmaster and conductor (Kapellmeister) from 1852 to 1871. turned that instinct into a business. He opened a shop in Cleveland that became a mecca for serious collectors. Unlike modern "card shops" that sell sealed wax boxes and protective sleeves, Hubay’s operation was a dusty archive of the dead-ball era. In 1874, Hubay traveled to Brussels to study at the Royal Conservatory, where he honed his skills under the guidance of prominent violinists and pedagogues. His time in Brussels had a profound impact on his musical development, laying the groundwork for his future success.

As a composer, Hubay wrote four successful operas, as well as orchestral works, string quartets, numerous pieces for violin, songs, and male choruses. As a respected violin teacher, he published a violin school that went into a second edition. His most famous student was his own son, , who became a celebrated violinist in his own right. Later in his career, Hubay became a violin professor at the National Conservatory in Budapest and, from 1919 to 1934, served as the Director of the Liszt Academy, where he built a renowned violin school.
